Hidden Treasures, Museum of Lead Mining
Hidden Treasure Museum Lead Mining is located in the heart of the village of Wanlockhead, which is Scotland's highest village. The Museum explores the history of lead and gold up to 300 years ago within the mining area.
Hidden Treasure Museum Lead Mining Inside the visitor centre there is a walk-through exhibition, which tells the story of how lead ore was won at the face and the processes it went through to become the lead products that we know today. The centre has guided tours through the lead mines and in the visitors centre there are displays of working models of mining machinery, and cottage museums explaining the daily lives of the miners. Not forgetting the Gold Panning Centre.
Also on display at Hidden Treasure Museum, Lead Mining are some of the most spectacular minerals found in the Lowther Hills, an area that is responsible for one percent of all known minerals in the World today. The Museum is unique in Scotland as it is the only former lead mine open to the public.
There is also a vast amount of information on the families who lived and worked in Wanlockhead and the surrounding areas.

Make your way along village paths to the two miners' cottages and see how the miners really lived before exploring the second oldest subscription Library in Europe, which has recently gained Recognition status as being a collection of National Significance. Museum Hidden Treasure Museum Lead Mining also known as Hidden Treasures, set in the picturesque village of Wanlockhead (the highest village in Scotland), is an excellent way to learn about lead mining in the 18th century, and experience the thrill of going underground!
Make your way along the village paths to 2 miners cottages that show you how miners really lived, take a trip into Lochnell Mine to find out how the miners worked, and learn all about the beam engines that used to pump out the water when the mines became too deep to drain from gravity alone! Within the Visitor Centre there is walk through exhibition, which tells the story of how lead ore was won at the face, and the processes it went through to become the lead products that is know today. Here you will see the different equipment and pumps used by the miners to win the ore and keep the water levels down.
Also on display are some of the most spectacular minerals found in the Lowther Hills, an area that is responsible for 1% of all known minerals in the World today! You can search for hidden gold yourself during July and August each year by trying your luck at Gold Panning, with the help of friendly and enthusiastic guides. The Museum is unique in Scotland as it is the only former lead mine open to the public.
