Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace.

TC Birthplace G2.jpgTo Look upon the humble house today, it is inspiring to reflect that it was the birthplace of one of Britain's most influential thinkers.

Thomas Carlyle was born  in 1795, and went on to become a great writer and historian, as well as one of the leading voices on 19th-century morals and social equality.

The birthplace has been open to the public since 1883 and has changed very little in that time, giving an authentic look into a Victorian household.  The interior of the house is furnished to reflect domestic life at Carlyle's time and contains a fascinating collection of portraits and Carlyle's personal belongings.
